TriBeCa
Neighborhood on the lower west side of Manhattan,
TriBeCa is short for Triangle Below Canal. Formerly known as Washington Market, it was home to the food market, including coffee, spices, tea, and nuts. Later, in the early 20th century,
textile manufactoring and dyiing also became common there. In the 1960's and 70's, artists began moving into the abandoned factory buildings (built between
1850 and
1890) in the neighborhood. This populated the area and made it resedentail for the first time (and it changed the name from Washington Market to TriBeCa). Robert Dinero moved to TriBeCa, helping it to become the affluent, star-studded neighborhood it is today, as well as making it famous with his "
Tribeca Productions" and in 2001, the
Tribeca Film Festival. Amoung the exclusive resturaunts and fancy lofts TriBeCa is filled with nowadays, there are many of the original artists who populated the neighborhood still living there. This creates a funny mix in the neighborhood. Also, it's manufactoring history is visable, with some original companies still there, such as
Bazzini's nuts and Bellbate's dried goods.

"TRIangle BElow
CAnal" Street. A very hip, and affluent neighborhood in Manhattan. Residents are in the
entertainment industry, finance, and other professionals. Amazing restaurants, and most apartments are
loft space. Quiet, with an ultra-low crime rate.

Way less of a corporate sell-out neighborhood than SoHo. Artsy and very family-friendly. Home to
Stuyvesant, P.S.
234, P.S./I.S. 81,
ECC, and many pre-schools. Lots of expensive restaurants, an awesome park, and about 10 different Starbucks establishments. You can get there on pretty much every existing subway line.

Someone who looks really bad. In reference to the
TriBeCa area of New York City where all the
artsy people hang out and live. They dont dress very well, or arent in fashion, so they are
TRIBECA!!!!! Usually screamed at the unsuspecting, or mentioned among friends about others.

OH MY GOD BECKY, look at that Tribeca over there. What the fuck was she thinking when she got
dressed this morning.

TriBeCa Native is non-profit organization based in lower Manhattan founded by
Nicole Bartelme soon after her creation of the
TriBeCa Film Festival. It's mission is to find sustainable solutions to
NY's neighborhood's challenges supporting job training, environmental cleanup activities and education initiatives.

TriBeCa Trail, I found the historic
plaque celebrating where Martin Guitars started their first workshop in 1833.

The
TriBeCa Film Festival was formed by
Nicole Bartelme 12/2000. (A full year before the WTC attacks). She signed a
buyout agreement, transferring all intellectual property rights to the TriBeCa Film Center 2/2002. Bartelme’s premise for the TriBeCa Film Festival was connected to the heart of the independent film community but also linked to music. Beyond incorporating films with great soundtracks, AI, theater and painting were at the core of the festival: a true festival of the arts.

It takes several individuals and supportive institutions to forge a lasting
TriBeCa Film Festival. In late 2000,
Nicole Bartelme met with MTV, then Co-Chair Tom Freston,
North Fork Bank and actor Robert De Niro’s partner, Tracy Neiporent of the TriBeCa Grill to gain sponsorship for the TriBeCa Film Festival. She launched the TriBeCa Film Festival’s web site on November 30th, 2001 as a response to the attacks on 9/11 to bring artists together, renewal to lower Manhattan. In January 2002 the site was removed, relaunched April 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Trina Wyatt and Robert De Niro creating the immersive film festival it is today.

Nicole Bartelme originated the
Tribeca Film Festival, based in lower Manhattan with its focus on independent filmmakers and films with innovative sound tracks. Proceeds of the festival were to benefit ACE -the Association For Community Employment . A component of her
blue print included a
family day to celebrate film in the community, to appease rather than alienate its residents and enjoin them into the festivities. The late April dates she chose corresponded with potential Los Angles film buyers on route to Europe for the Cannes Film Festival. Bartelme, engaged in legalities with Jane
Rosenthal of the Tribeca Film Center, relinquished all rights after 9/11, 2001. The Tribeca Film Festival was then launched in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. The Festival’s mission is to promote New York City as a major filmmaking center and allow its filmmakers to reach the broadest possible audience. By upholding a belief in the artistic process as a means to tell the stories of loss and redemption, fear and prosperity, chaos and revolution with the spirit of independent film at the helm.
