They can be displayed as popups, popunders, banners, skyscrapers, text ads and in many other ways.Some companies exploit them as adware - programs that advertise on the computer they are installed on. Normally the user doesn't know that they're installed until seeing the first ads. Although, most people avoid using such over-advertised products because they have no interest in supporting such companies that exploit adware.Some web browsers, like Firefox, have the ability to have add-ons installed. Such add-ons include ad blockers like Adblock Plus, that help the user remove unwanted flash, text, picture, and whole frame ads. For other browsers, users can install additional software that remove ads.

In video games (or games in general) - a minion or weak enemy, often killed easily and accompanied by a stronger enemy or boss element. They are usually deemed annoying by the players because they appear in large numbers and prevent progression: much like advertisements in real life.

Such ads are most commonly found in role-playing games (RPGs) and some first-person shooters (FPS).
Example:
A: "Why do we have to kill all these ads before the door opens? Can't we just burst through and kill the bad guy? I mean, he's right over there!"

B: "Because, developers are foregoing creative battles for artificial difficulty... I mean, because the boss has a magic shield that won't run out of power until we kill all the ads, duh."

The devil's creations on almost every website (app if you're on a mobile device) and YouTube makes the YouTube Premium (which is a YouTube with no ads and shows and movies) too expensive so I get all the ads.
