Verb: to call for someone's attention, especially in an online chatroom (originally used in
IRC, where mentioning a
user's nickname would cause the message to be
highlighted on their screen, accompanied by a sound)
Noun: an instance of such a calling for attention.
Example:
You could have asked: is there a reason this easy patch was not applied, either on IRC or private mail by me. You did write a comment on IRC and I did see it. Problem is that you did not highlight me _and_ you did not wait for an answer. *(actual example from linux.

Feel free to highlight me or anyone else for a chat.
Stop highlighting me, we've been through this.
I didn't see your highlight. *(noun)*

A person or persons who are
physically and visually less attractive than you while you stand next to them. Producing a
visual that
highlights you because of their dullness.
Example:
Mikey is my hightlighter, so I bring him out to the
clubs with me all the time.
