Contrary to fallacious
urban legends about the word's supposedly racist roots, "picnic" is derived from the French term "
pique nique", and refers to a meal eaten out of doors, where the participating groups each bring their own food.

Apparantly, the source of the word picnic is "pick a nigger", where after eating, sack-races and

A term used to describe the
gatherings held in
slave days when
slave oweners would "pick-nigs". The "g" was replaced with "c" to create a more PC word.
