Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, "w00t"."w00t" was originally an trunicated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for "Wow, loot!" Thus the term passed into the net-culture where it thrived in video game communities and lost its original meaning and is used simply as a term of excitement.

A word originating from the old D&D games, was used to express excitement when finding treasure, the player would say "Wow loot!" thus over time turning into "w00t" in the videogame world, as a form of satisfaction or victory..

A leet speak form of saying huzzah or hurray.

It originated from back in the days of MUD games, after killing an opponent loot was a rare find, so if someone found loot they would say "wow loot!". This evolved into "woot" for short which further evolved to simply be a general exclamation of excitement.

Example:
Bob: I just killed a monster! wow loot!

In 1990 we used woot when playing tabletop dice Dungeons and Dragons when we came across good gear or loot.. Now its worked its way into online games and chat speak.

Same sorta meaning, excitment, happy, wow I found someone I wanted or liked.

Example:
DM: You come across a chest filled with unicorn horns.
Mage: WOOT!
Druid: HOW HORRIBLE!

"Woot" (w00t, wewt) was a term used for the phrase "We owned the other team!". However, it is more commonly used as a sign of happyness. Read below.

Used as an interjection, this word was originated back in the early days of MMO's and games with Online PvP (player vs Player) action. Teams of players (Guilds, Clans, etc.) would go around and fight other players. When and if they would win they would all say "woot" jump around and celebrate.

However that term is now obsolete. The way it is more commonly used is still as an interjection, but it now stands for "Awsome!" or "Yay!". This may happen when something good happens to a player such as getting good loot or leveling up in a game such as World of Warcraft or MU.

Example:
Way 1:
"Dude... lets kill these guys"
*Start Fighting
"Woot we won!"

Way 2:
*Is fighting monster
"WOOT I GOT THE SWORD I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!"
"Grats"

Actually, the word woot is much older than EQ or 80s hacker lingo. It is a middle english word meaning "know" or "knew."

2. A greeting, used for close friends or people you have been expecting.

Example:
1. Double kill! WOOT!

2. When the person you are awaiting appears, it is customary to offer a long "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!" The only appropriate response to said Woot is two short, emphatic "WOOT WOOT!"
