During the French Revolution, peasants and others not represented by the other estates sat in the left wing (in contrast to the nobility who sat in the right wing). To this day, the left wing continues to represent minorities and the common people.

Left wing is a very generic term to describe a political position relative to what is currently accepted as the general consensus. Contrary to popular belief left-wing extremist are as common and possible and extreme as right-wing extremists. If you are left thinking you generally aspire to state-control and inclusiveness regardless of others. If you are right thinking you generally aspire to freedom and responsibility with a few strict rules - life is what you make it and there is no welfare-state to rely on.
Example:
Left, center-left, center-right, right - all quite generic terms to describe a political standpoint. Lenin is an example of someone on the extreme left.

A system of thinking that advocates for the destruction or elimination of social hierarchies in pursuit of a more fair and just society. Schools of thought include Socialism, Communism, and Anarchism. Does not exist in many western countries.

The left typically expresses opposition to practices which produce inequality and hierarchies such as states and private (not personal) property. It is also fundamentally opposed to racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of bigotry.
Example:
Bernie Sanders is the closest thing America has had to a left wing candidate, yet anyone who knows anything about left wing ideology knows that he is center left at the very most. He’s not even calling for the elimination of the state.

An extreme political position that generally advocates for larger governments with broader intervention and increased taxes for the middle income to rich. Generally, advocates of all-inclusive welfare policies and social policies. Left wingers are protectionist with respect to trade policies and globalisation in general.
Example:
Jill: Was the russian experiments under Lenin and Stalin considered left wing because the government at the time disallowed freedom of speech and press?

Joe: Partly. The fact that all industry was nationalised, completely nullifying any private sector innovation contributed to the philosophy as well. The results were extreme poverty and loss of hope and motivation for the society at large.
