edgy

Simple-mindedly and
transparently trying to appear tough or 'cool', for the sake of being
provocative and/or offensive.
Usually, this is done to disguise the fact that otherwise, that person or thing is not at all -
intellectually or otherwise - provocative.
Example:
The main protagonist of the video game
DmC:
Devil May Cry is a good example of an edgy character. Instead of allowing himself to be perceived as cool or tough by others through doing impressive things, he needs to resort to heavy cursing and macho
posturing. In doing so, it becomes clear to the viewer that the character itself is probably trying desperately to seem cooler than they are.
In stark contrast, the protagonist of previous games in the series was considered cool because of his wit, carefree attitude, and refusal to be intimidated. If he too attempted to make himself look cool, at least those attempts were
cloaked better, and didn't try to be overtly provocative.

"why are you wearing that
bandanna out of your pocket," says
9th grade homeroom teacher.
"because i'm effin edgy biotch," says asshole.

Adjective. Taking coolness to its extreme and generally beyond the realm of actual possibility, while at the same time seemingly unaware of
how ridiculous it is.
Distinctions from similar words:
*
Mary-Sue: This is distinct from
mary-sue because characters generally have "flaws", but which end up making them cooler as opposed to actually flawed.
* Try-hard: Edgy characters go for diversity in their coolness instead of a specific theme. An edgy character is much more diversely cool, whereas a try-hard goes for something specific, like "only using knives" or "hates color because he/she is goth".
*
Campy: Edgy things are either unaware of their ridiculousness or actively try to explain it away. In contrast,
campy things are totally aware of how ridiculous they are and actively embrace it.
Example:
Examples of Edgy characters/things:
* Guts from Berserk: short black hair, insanely large sword, missing hand (which he replaced with a gun), scars (which make him look cool).
* Dante from the more recent DMC:Devil May Cry.
*
Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII.
* Pretty much any protagonist of a "dark and gritty" anime.
* All of the characters from the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series.
* Nearly every character in a World of Darkness campaign, especially when LARPing.
*
Clive Owen,
Jason Statham Bruce Willis, and Liam Neeson in a lot of their more recent films.

Daria - "As far as I can make out, edgy occurs when
middlebrow, middle-aged profiteers are looking to suck the energy -- not to mention the spending money -- out of the "youth culture." So they come up with this fake concept of seeming to be dangerous when every move they make is the result of
market research and a corporate
master plan."

We only do edgy.
Is it edgy?

1) An internet slang in which it implies to anyone online behaving or saying things that are against the mainstream, usually
angering a certain fandom
populace. These things are often in forms of inane comments, senseless insults, and commonly
shit-posting. "Edgy" people in the internet are often known to be trolls.
2) Anything implied as "emo-ish", like anything red-and-black or away from the norm.
Example:
OP: *posts a sexy picture of a character from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic*
Person 1: 11/10 would fuck.
Person 2: Smexy ;D
Person 3: This
fandom's art never cease to amaze me.
Person 4: >people want to fuck cartoon horses
You should
all fuck with a psychiatrist
Person 5: Dude, why are you even here?
Person 6: This Person 4 is edgy. THE EDGE IS REAL!

ANOTHER NEW TREND OF AN
OVERUSED ADJECTIVE
THROWN AROUND THE INTERNET TO USE IN ARGUMENTS AND PATHETIC INSULTS WHEN THE PERSON USING THE WORD DOES NOT HAVE THE CREATIVE CAPACITY OR A THOUGHT PROCESS WHICH CAN
GENERATE ORIGINAL MATERIAL TO USE AN INSULT THAT STILL HAS SOME VALUE
Example:
Person who is entitled to their opinion: I don't like Marvel movies, they're too cheesy and not very serious
Internet Sheep user: Wh0a, u must be rlly
edgy br0. dam br0, look at u, ur so edgy.

A word that teenage
internet trolls use to describe anyone that has more personality than a
shovel. This includes anyone who likes any kind of music, movies, video games, books, art, fashion, as well as anyone who DOESN'T
accuse others of being "edgy." Typically, the people who use this term have low IQs, and do not know the actual two definitions of the word. They use it to insult anyone who is not them, not realizing that one of the definitions is a compliment, and the other simply means "nervous."
Example:
"wow, dat bitch thinks she soooooo edgy cuz she
lieks 2 watch
horror movies even tho an overwhelming amount of peeps of all ages also like horror movies."
"u think ur so edgy cuz you like 2 draw."
"u were professionally diagnosed with
schizophrenia? wow, u must think ur so edgy."
