Unaware of one's foolishness. Originates from "What a Piece of Work is Man" monologue from Hamlet. More precisely an ironic reflection of how little most men achieve despite being endowed with relatively enormous powers to act and reason. Generally used as a sarcastic "compliment."
Example:
My boss can't operate the photocopier without the assistance of half the admin staff. He's a real piece of work!

Clean version of "piece of sh.." where overt profanity is out of place. Commonly refers to an individual who despite a wealth of help and "understanding", options yields utter disappointment. To accept one is naive.(Avoid) To reject one is to understand.(Recommend)

I'm not sure what it means. My boss says it all the time.

1) He says it about attractive women.

2) He says it about a retarded guy wearing a neon yellow reflective vest and riding a tricycle on the sidewalk.
Example:
1) Wooo, look at her. She's a piece of work.

2) Look at that guy. He's a piece of work isn't he?

An expression that is generally used in a negative context and when referring to an individual that is often selfish, foolish, careless, etc.
Example:
Friend: "John got three tickets to the big game on Saturday, but rather than inviting us he is taking a couple of girls he met just last night".

Me: "That guy is a real piece of work".
