Redneck
Rednecks live in the Southeastern United States. While they do not comprise the entire population in this region they do make up the vast majority of the people here. Typically, rednecks live in rural settings. They avoid urban settings. They are proud of their pick-up trucks or older cars and stick with them despite rising
gas prices. They typically work industrial or
manual labor jobs. The majority do not have anything beyond a high school education. They depend on the "Good 'Ol Boy" system of advancement. They are extremely weary of those who do possess the desire to act educated -- these people are perceived as sell-outs. You can often see rednecks
hauling lawn equipment or hunting (dog) equipment even if they do not plan on using these items in the near future. It is a proud symbol of their social class. Rednecks often are seen about in hunting attire even though they do not plan to hunt anything. Dressing up comprises of
dockers and a tucked in polo shirt. Baseball hats on men are a must regardless of the occasion or whether indoors or not. Most rednecks do not live in
mobile homes anymore. Most have modest homes. Typically they decorate in Native American or hunting themes. Most devote much more money into their vehicles then their homes.Rednecks speak with a Southern accent and avoid using big words. They may know big words but it is not socially acceptable to use them. People who do are identified as outsiders.Rednecks support major brands such as Coca-Cola and Nascar. Their major past times are watching television, hunting, fishing, and shooting. They
detest reading (other than
romance novels or the newspaper). Rednecks tend to be
socially conservative. They are extremely defensive against outsiders and anyone different from them. They have learned to avoid those who do not adopt their culture. Many rednecks may also be Evangelical Christians. They will not hesitate upon meeting you to tell you that you "are going to hell" if you are not also Baptist or a similar denomination.Overall, rednecks are extremely friendly people but they are very reluctant to accept those different from them so it is hard for others to mingle with them or understand them. Many do not ever travel outside of this region. Places such as the
Blue Ridge Mountains, Pigeon Forge, and
Myrtle Beach are considered to be the ultimate vacation spots. They are very stubborn about their conservative beliefs. They believe that all liberals have lesser moral values. This is often hypocritical -- for example, the Southeast has a much higher divorce rate then the rest of the nation. Part of this stubbornness also stems from their idea that their culture is under attack since they tend to associate morality with social conservativeness. This stubbornness can have many negative effects -- it can contribute to
false knowledge of the world and the culture within and outside of the Southeast. For this reason, most rednecks will to this day deny that the Civil War was about slavery. Finally, most rednecks are closet racists. They will vehemently
deny this but racist remarks are often made among white groups. They are outwardly friendly towards minorities but they certainly have very large
reservations about hiring or becoming close friends with them. This is done almost as a quest for
assurance amongst each other that no one in their presence is a cultural sellout.

After reading most of these i realize that people have no idea what Rednecks are. We are called racist but most people posting are more racist towards us than we are towards any minority. You say we are sister bangers, nascar lovers, toothless, imbred, ignorant and broke. Those are
white trash people. Some Rednecks love nascar
and thats fine but that doesnt mean we all do. We are hard workers that love our family, friends and country. You say we drive rusted old trucks and cars and live in mobile homes and shacks. Truth is most of us have better vehicles and houses than the average person because we arent lazy and we work hard for the things we have. We hunt, fish and spend time outdoors but we
obey the law doing these things because we want everybody to be able to enjoy these things. So think next time before you point fingers and say we are just ignorant and useless. I would like to see you try to fix your own vehicle.

A redneck is simply a caucasian
southerner. I will agree, not all rednecks are educated, but some of us are. The fact that a person enjoys outdoor activities does not make them a redneck. You have your redneck, and then you have your WHITE TRASH, or caucasian waste, rather. Rednecks tend to be classier, more intellectual
southerners, while white trash folks are described as...well....just read most of the above definitions. Rednecks are not the racists, white trash folks are. You people are getting it all mixed up.
Redneck = polite, friendly southerner who might happen to enjoy chewing tobacco
White Trash = dumb-ass
backwater hicks who make southerners look bad.

The idea of Redneck has been
fraught with stereotypes, but a redneck is any relatively right-wing, lower/middle class person living in a
rural area who has little or no regard for being overly sophisticated or formal. Contrary to popular belief, a person of any race or ethnic background can be a redneck. The only people who can't be rednecks are
metrosexuals, members of overly glamorous subcultures, liberals, and male homosexuals.
Redneck is a subculture, but it's more of an ideology than a style. Thus, a redneck can be part of a second subculture as long as it isn't too glamorous. Subcultural members that can be rednecks include Metalheads, wiggers in some cases, and less fancy-looking punks.
Subcultures that cannot be redneck include Emo, Scene, Goth, the richer looking wiggers, and the more fancy-looking punks.
Common activities that rednecks engage in include hunting, fishing, riding ATVs or dirtbikes, shooting, etc. Pickup trucks are preferable for rednecks, though not essential. The Confederate flag is sometimes used to rednecks not to promote racism, but to promote
Confederation, or weaker federal government.
Rednecks are the exact opposite of metrosexuals and
city people. They are never afraid to express their views, and aren't afraid to
get dirty. They also hate gangsta wannabes and are not intimidated by them.
Example:
City Gangsta: I went into the country and tried to steal stuff from this
barn, but this
redneck came out with a shotgun and told me to get the fuck out. I pulled out my
switchblade and showed him my gang tattoos to intimidate him, but he just laughed.

Not a hick;may or may not have an education--either its stereotyped way too often. Its an attitude and style. Often an adopted way of life. Care free,
cut and dry,
roughneck attitude/qualities. Aint afraid to kick someones ass over the smallest things, often give "what are you lookin at asshole smirks" often quoted with "Aint
Skeered!", may show racist qualities--and for the most part love Nascar...articles of clothing:sporting t-shirts, jean or work shorts, work boots, cut off flannel shirts, sporting caps, anything camoflauge
Example:
Man, that Mark--he
aint skeered ta kick no ones ass. How many times does he have "ed-u-cate ya" not ta mess with em?

1.) A person from a rural subculture with
a jolly personality, who, despite a penchant for alcohol and bad facial hair, can be lots of fun to hang with.
2.) A racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise bigoted person, who thinks non-Christians are going to hell, George Bush was a great president, and trailer-park
mustaches are sexy.
3.) What average,
middle-class white Christians call themselves when they want to pretend they're members of a struggling minority culture.

The idea that redneck originated from laborers and farmers who had sun burnt or red necks is a myth. The term actually originated during the mining wars in the 1920's. The union miners and
non-union miners were fighting because union workers were losing there jobs because during this time joining a
worker's union was thought to be communist and could be considered treason. When the union and non-union workers fought the non-union workers wore white arm bands and the union workers wore red bandanas around their necks. The slang term for a
union worker then became "redneck" but now the meaning has turned into a derogitory and ignorant term.

In the 1630s, during the crises that culminated in the English Civil War,
the
Presbyterians of Scotland dissented from both the mainstream Anglican
view, as well as that of the rising "
Puritans." In their view, the
Anglicans were "Catholics-minus-the-Pope," while the Puritans were
half-crazed utopian dim-wits who wanted to create a "shining city on the
hill" so that they could rule the City. In declarations issued in 1638 and
1641, these Lowland Scots issued so-called "Covenants," whereby they
declared that they would not accept the Anglican form of Church govt (headed
by the King), but would also not accept the Puritans' theological/political
view. "Covenanters" signed their oaths in their own blood, and many wore
red pieces of cloth or stiff, red collars to signify their identity as dissenters (thus "Red-Necks"). After the English Civil War, and then again after the
Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, these Scots were forced to
emigrate to America, and they largely settled in the South. By the time of the AMERICAN Civil War, the term was used to describe white Southerners of all theological stripes. Interestingly, most of the English-surnamed people of the NORTH were descended from
PURITANS!
