mod
Mod is a
dandified youth subculture that developed and was strongest in the 1960's, but has experienced many reincarnations since then and is still very much in existance. As with many subcultures, the defining characteristics are clothing and music, both of which become an obsession for Mods. The clothing has a vintage, well-taylored, and
peacockish look, favoring bright patterns, plenty of color, brands like
Ben Sherman and
Fred Perry, and slim-cut, three button suits (preferrably Italian) in the style of the sixties. The favored music of Mods is varied rather widely but, for the most part, shares the characteristic of being
danceable. Favored genres include old school Ska, Soul, and R&B as well as New Wave,
Britpop, and some things that, today, are
heaped into the rather loose label of "Alternative Rock".Another defining characteristic of Mods is their chosen mode of transportation, the Italian moterscooter (most notably Vespa and
Lambretta). Not everyone who rides a scooter is Mod, however. These scooters tend to be in a retro style and sometimes heavily customized.Unlike the case with some other social subgroups, there exists no Mod ideology or philosophy(outside of a general avoidance of violence because of unwillingness to damage their clothes and the idea that, as The Who put it in one of their earliest songs "you gotta be cool"). However, this does not mean that Mods do not have any depth; only that there is no specific mindset associated with the group.

In computers:
1. Modification. Ranges from add-ons (Example:
UT2K4 VCTF) to Total
Conversions (Example: Classic Doom for Doom 3,
Red Orchestra, Counter-Strike)
2. Moderators. The ones who lay down and enforce rules in forums/message boards.

Often this term stands for modification; in reference to vaping pens, a mod is simply a vaping pen (type of
electronic cigarette) with a bigger battery, and more functionality to give a device which holds a charge longer, produces more flavor, more "
throat hit", and usually offers other functions such as variable
voltage, variable resistance, and recently temperature control. Mods are continually being improved, e.g. with computerized electronics which can be upgraded via bluetooth connection.
Example:
Have you seen the newest mod by Inokin? It has overcharge protection, a
puff counter,
temperature control, and allows for sub-ohm
vaping for more flavor.

Youth characterized by sharp fashion, influenced by 1960's music and culture, and a possible love of Vespa/
Lambretta/Piaggio scooters showing alienation from
mainstream pop culture. This style originated in Britian.
The word "Mod" can also be loosely tied to a "
modernist", who does not fill the above characteristics, but is "hip" into today's appealing fashions/trends/etc...
Example:
1. "Nice
scooter."
"Yeah. Some Mod dude helped me
restore it."
"Wanna come to my house tonight and watch 'Quadrophenia'"?
"Sure."
2. "Adam is all into
modern rock! That f---in' mod..."

A 60's cult followed by those in their late teens who wanted to be different to the traditional 'POP' culture.
Bands included 'Small Faces', 'The Who' etc. Usually rode Lambrette
scooters and met at rallys.
MODS were included in the riots at
Brighton during the MOD time period.
For a full explanation, watch the movie 'Quadrophenia'.
