Ethereum is a "blockchain app platform", and a "world computer".

It has Ether as a volatile cryptocurrency, with the ticker ETH. The price of ETH drops when Ethereum hodlers read news headlines like "The founder of Ethereum died in a car crash", or there are scams with initial token offerings, or ITOs. The network slows down during ITOs, or when apps are used too much, such as when too many people play a game for trading digital cats, called Cryptokitties.

It's "a decentralized platform that runs smart contracts: applications that run exactly as programmed without any possibility of downtime, censorship, fraud or third-party interference.

"These apps run on a custom built blockchain, an enormously powerful shared global infrastructure that can move value around and represent the ownership of property.

"This enables developers to create markets ... and many other things ... all without a middleman or counterparty risk.

The project was bootstrapped via an Ether ICO in August 2014.

Developers and researchers are working on various improvements improvements to the protocol and ecosystem, e.g. as described in a thread on ethresear.ch.

A cryptocurrency, similar to Bitcoin, but with different technical implementations and uses. Has the second largest market capitalization (after Bitcoin), as of August 2017.

Often abbreviated as ETH or Ether.

Slighly less than 100 million ETH are in circulation and the price has risen with about 50000% (fifty thousand percent) since 2015.
Example:
Steve told me about Ethereum when it first released back in 2015. He bought about 1000 ETH for $0.50 each and I bought none.

currently as of 8/17/22, Ethereum has postponed the transition from proof of work to proof of stake so many times, it is reasonable to assume it will not occur. worst case scenario is transition from proof of work to proof of stake transition takes place. then $200 billion loss occurs divided in the following groups, Ethereum holders ( due to instant crash), and less to miners because there is always etc mining

The original shitcoin. First described in a white paper by Vitalik Buterin in November 2013, the idea was to create a coin similar to BTC without everything that made bitcoin different or interesting in the first place.

Features include: unlimited money supply, high gas fees, proof-of-stake (whoever owns the most essentially owns the coin, and can update it at will), constantly changing monetary policy, the ability to include computer viruses (decentralized applications) in what's supposed to be a store of value for some reason.

Proponents of ETH tend to be people with far-left political views, central bankers, scammers, and foreign agents.
Example:
Person 1: I decided to buy crypto this week. I bought 50% BTC and 50% ethereum.

Person 2: So you spent 50% of your money on shitcoins? What's the point? Even LTC is better than that garbage...
