Example:
A 2 year old child learns on average 9 new concepts a day. Somehow the brains of toddlers can
intuit multiple abstract concepts over the course of a day. Do you remember what it was like to understand what a drain is? a lock? to sweat? to worry? to forget? glass?
digestion?
Linguistics explores the way people use language and its connection to the brain/cognitive development.

So, how many languages do you speak?
You should work for
the UN. They speak languages.
You mean so you can, like, invent new languages? There's a lot of money in that, you know.
I like reading the dictionary.
So, are you a
cunning linguist?
Chomsky. (knowing nod)
Oh, so you know where words come from.
Wanna come work for the CIA with us?

Someone who gets a strange joy from correcting other peoples spelling and
grammatical errors on the Internet.Often
Anal retentive and can count their friends on one hand.
Referring to a person of this nature as a Linguistic will drive them insane, as its not the correct use of the word. Also see
Grammar Nazi.
Example:
tim: I went to that new restuarant yesterday, the
burgers their are nice.
john: Whats a restuarant?

Can have religious connotations. In Genesis, God destroys a the Tower of
Babel which man is building in order to reach the heavens. He also
scatters man across the world and gives them different languages so that people cannot communicate with one another.
Describing someone as a 'linguist' suggests he is one who can unite mankind once more, and
free him from oppression. Potentially, he does this through his poetic skill rather than through speaking all the world's languages.
Of course, it's used a bit more lightly than all that...
Example:
That
rapper is a linguist.

A clever
play on words to use in place of the word wordcunnilingus/word. The first play on words being of the similar sound, one who thinks a bit more about it will realize a "cunning linguist" would
be someone who is skilled at speaking,
implying the mouth, thus, someone skilled with their mouth.
