phony
Anyone who takes the effort to look or act
differently than they normally would to impress others. Usually very embarrassing to watch, though
entertaining if it is someone you don't like.
Almost always obvious.

"I'm the most
terrific liar you ever saw in your life. It's awful. If I'm on my way to the store to buy a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm
liable to say I'm going to
the opera. It's terrible."

Example:
"What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff- I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be
the catcher in the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like to be. I know it's crazy."
