A side burn (not to be confused with the popular 1960s hairstyle of the same name) is a situation in which the paper on a cigarette burns more heavily or completely on one side.

It occurs most often on self-rolled and marijuana cigarettes. Side-burned cigarettes are rarely represented in the mass media. However, in underground youth culture, side burning is an often admonished phenomenon. Sideburns are most commonly found in student houses, or in areas that attract weed smokers. Although representations in the media are scarce, there have been mentions of ‘sideburning’ on popular Facebook pages, such as ‘Rate My Rollie’.
